Oversamples, in general, refers to the practice of collecting or processing more samples than are strictly necessary to represent the underlying signal or population. In signal processing, this usually means sampling a continuous-time signal at a rate well above the Nyquist rate to form an oversampled digital representation. In statistics and survey sampling, oversampling refers to deliberately sampling more heavily from a particular subgroup to improve estimation for that subgroup.

In digital electronics, oversampling increases sampling rate by a factor OSR relative to twice the highest frequency component. The extra samples improve the signal-to-noise ratio through averaging and enable simpler anti-aliasing filters. After acquisition, a decimation filter reduces the sample rate to the desired level while preserving signal quality. Oversampling is central to sigma-delta ADCs and some digital audio systems. It does not replace proper bandwidth or filtering but complements them.

Statistical oversampling reduces estimator variance for underrepresented groups by obtaining more observations. It is used in survey design and machine learning to ensure adequate representation, followed by weighting adjustments to preserve overall population totals. Potential drawbacks include increased cost, potential bias if weighting is inadequate, and the need to correct for sampling framework.

Common considerations include the target OSR, data throughput, noise characteristics, and computational load. Oversampling can enable higher effective resolution and better subgroup analysis, but must be paired with appropriate processing and sampling design.
