ostatním

Ostatním is a Czech adjective form, a declined form of ostatní meaning "the others" or "the rest." It functions as part of a noun phrase and must agree with the noun in gender, number, and case. The form ostatním appears primarily in two uses: dative plural and instrumental singular masculine/neuter. In the dative plural it means "to the others" (to the other people). For example: Dali to ostatním. In the instrumental singular it appears after prepositions or with a noun in the instrumental case: S ostatním kolegou jsem mluvil. In both uses the noun that follows or is implied determines the exact meaning.

The base form ostatní is commonly used to refer to people or things remaining or different from those already mentioned, as in ostatní lidé (the other people). The phrase can also function attributively, as in ostatní studenti (the other students) or ostatní položky (the remaining items).

Etymologically, ostatní derives from the same root as other and is used throughout Czech to contrast or group entities with those previously identified.
