osottuline

Osottuline is a Lithuanian-language online encoding of the Lithuanian language that was used to encode Lithuanian language texts in the 20th century. The system consists of reversing the sequence of letters in the original text, excluding punctuation and common ligatures.

The name "Osottuline" comes from the Lithuanian words "oso" and "tuli", which mean "from the left" and "burn", respectively. This name refers to the fact that each letter in the encoded text starts from the left side of the original text.

Osottuline was used to encode Lithuanian language texts before the widespread use of computers and encoding schemes like Unicode. The system was particularly used during World War II, when Lithuanian language materials were banned and censored by the occupiers. After the war, Osottuline was gradually replaced by other encoding schemes as the use of computers and digital technologies became more widespread.

Today, Osottuline remains a curiosity among cryptographers and historians. Its simplicity and the fact that it was an attempt to encode a language without using computer algorithms make it an interesting footnote in the development of language encoding and cryptography.

Osottuline is not related to the Lithuanian word "ostulinas", which is a type of willow tree. It is also not related to the Ol stuline, a variant of the Russian word for the city of Ostule, which is now a part of the Ukraine.
