Oppvandring, in demography and human geography, refers to internal population movement within a country from less densely populated or economically peripheral areas toward more densely populated or economically dynamic regions. The term is often used to describe urbanization processes where people relocate to cities or metropolitan areas. It is the counterpart to nedvandring or rural flight and differs from international immigration and emigration.

Causes and drivers include the availability of jobs and higher wages in cities, access to education, healthcare, cultural and leisure amenities, and better infrastructure. Housing market conditions, age structure, and government policies also influence patterns. Social networks and family ties can reinforce continuing movement toward urban centers.

Measurement of oppvandring relies on population registers, censuses, or surveys that track origins and destinations within a country. Net oppvandring to a region is the difference between in-migration and out-migration over a given period.

Effects of oppvandring are varied. Receiving regions may experience increased demand for housing, schools, and services, along with pressure on infrastructure. Sending regions can face population decline, aging, and labor shortages in rural areas, affecting local economies and tax bases. Over time, internal migration can contribute to regional disparities and influence regional planning and policy.

Examples and history show that many industrialized countries experienced substantial oppvandring during the 20th century as urban centers expanded. In Nordic countries, such flows helped grow cities like Oslo and Göteborg while rural areas faced slower growth.
