Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the eye. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) who specializes in eye and vision care. They are trained to perform eye exams, diagnose and treat eye diseases, prescribe medications, and perform eye surgery.

Ophthalmologists provide a full spectrum of eye care, from routine eye exams and vision tests to diagnosing and treating complex eye diseases. They can also prescribe and fit eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct vision problems. Many ophthalmologists subspecialize in specific areas of eye care, such as retina, glaucoma, cornea, pediatrics, or neuro-ophthalmology.

The field of ophthalmology involves a deep understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, as well as the various conditions that can affect it. These conditions can range from common refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) to more serious diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
