Openingup is an American indie rock band that emerged from the Seattle music scene in 2010. The group was founded by vocalist and guitarist Alex Ramirez, bassist Maya Chen, and drummer Daniel Foster, who met while studying at the University of Washington. Their early work drew inspiration from the lo‑fi aesthetics of The Shins and the experimental post‑punk of Interpol, blending intimate storytelling with layered guitar riffs.

The band released their debut EP, First Step, in 2011 on an independent label. The EP was well received by local press, and its single “Echoes in the Hallway” received rotation on KEXP. In 2012 they followed up with a full-length album, Breaking Walls, produced by former Modest Mouse engineer Peter Kember. The album explored themes of urban isolation and personal resilience, earning them a nomination for Best Alternative Album at the 2013 Independent Music Awards.

Openingup gained national attention through a series of nationwide tours and a spot on NPR’s Tiny Desk series in 2014. Their 2016 release, Between Lines, featured collaborations with singer-songwriter Lila Duarte and expanded their sound to include synth textures and brass arrangements. The band has also been involved in community outreach, hosting free music workshops for under‑served youth in Seattle.

As of 2024, Openingup continues to perform and record, maintaining a dedicated fan base while exploring new lyrical and sonic directions.
