Oorkondes are the Dutch term for medieval charters or grants. A oorkonde records a legal act issued by a ruler, noble, city, or church authority that grants rights, privileges, property, or confirmations to a person or institution. These documents functioned as official proof of the act and as a record for future reference. They were usually written on parchment or vellum, often in Latin but sometimes in the vernacular. A typical oorkonde names the grantor and the recipient, describes the land or privilege, states the date and place of issue, lists witnesses, and bears the seal of the grantor.
