Omordningar, or rearrangements, describe the process of changing the order of elements in a sequence, a set, or a string. In mathematics, the term is commonly used for permutations—reorderings of a finite list. In linguistics and puzzle games, omordningar often refer to constructing new words or phrases by rearranging letters, known as anagrams.

In linguistics and games, anagrams preserve the same multiset of letters. Classic examples include listen and silent in English. Anagrams can be exact or partial, and can be used as wordplay, cryptic clues, or linguistic studies of symmetry in language.

In combinatorics, the study of omordningar focuses on counting and characterizing possible reorderings. For a sequence of n distinct elements, there are n! different omordningar. The complete set of reorderings forms the symmetric group S_n, with composition as the group operation. Parity distinguishes even and odd rearrangements, and any permutation can be decomposed into transpositions.

In analysis, rearrangements of terms in a series are also called omordningar. If a series is absolutely convergent, any rearrangement yields the same sum; if it is only conditionally convergent, a rearrangement can alter the sum or cause divergence (the Riemann rearrangement theorem).
