Omistuspronominit, also known as possessive pronouns, are words that indicate ownership or possession. In Finnish, they function similarly to possessive adjectives in other languages, but they agree in number and case with the noun they modify. The primary possessive pronouns are minun (my), sinun (your, singular informal), hänen (his/her/its), meidän (our), teidän (your, plural or formal singular), and heidän (their).

These pronouns precede the noun they possess and are inflected to match the noun's case and number. For example, "minun kirjani" means "my book" (nominative case). If the noun is in the genitive case, the possessive pronoun also changes: "minun kirjastani" translates to "from my library." The possessive suffixes, such as -ni, -si, -nsa, -mme, -nne, and -nsa, are often used instead of separate possessive pronouns, especially when the possessor is clear from the context. For instance, "kirjani" can also mean "my book," where the "-ni" suffix indicates possession.

The use of separate possessive pronouns is often for emphasis or clarity. For example, "Minun kirjani on punainen" (My book is red) contrasts with "Sinun kirjasi on sininen" (Your book is blue). Understanding the declension of both the possessive pronouns and the possessive suffixes is crucial for correct usage in Finnish grammar.
