omgedoopt

Omgedoopt is a Dutch term with two related uses. In religious contexts it denotes rebaptism, the act of being baptized again. In secular usage it often describes the renaming or rebranding of an organization, place, event, or project, typically after significant changes such as mergers or reforms.

Etymology: The word comes from dopen (to baptize) with the prefix om- indicating reversal or transformation. Gedopt is the past participle of dopen, and omgedoopt literally means baptized again.

Usage: In Dutch journalism, history writing and administrative language the form appears as 'omgedoopt tot' or 'omgedoopt naar' when a name is changed. For rebaptism, it describes the religious rite in denominations that perform repeated baptisms, though this is relatively uncommon; the figurative sense is far more frequent in contemporary prose.

Examples: After the merger the company was omgedoopt tot NovaTech Group. The town was omgedoopt tot Nieuwstad after the reorganization. In religious contexts some traditions practice rebaptism, for instance when a convert is rebaptized.
