The causes of oligomenorrhea are varied and can include hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), excessive exercise, significant weight loss or gain, stress, and certain medical conditions like thyroid disorders or pituitary tumors. Adolescents may also experience irregular cycles as their bodies adjust to hormonal changes.

Diagnosis of oligomenorrhea usually involves a review of the menstrual history, a physical examination, and potentially blood tests to check hormone levels. Imaging studies like an ultrasound may also be used to examine the ovaries and uterus.

Treatment for oligomenorrhea depends on the underlying cause. If PCOS is identified, management might involve lifestyle changes, medication to regulate cycles, or fertility treatments if pregnancy is desired. For other causes, addressing the specific condition, such as managing stress or thyroid issues, is key. In some cases, hormonal therapies may be prescribed to induce regular periods. If left unaddressed, oligomenorrhea can sometimes lead to an increased risk of endometrial hyperplasia or cancer due to prolonged exposure to estrogen without sufficient progesterone.
