Oldalhossz is a term used in geometry to denote the length of a side of a polygon or polyhedron. In a polygon with vertices V1, V2, ..., Vn (taken in order), the i-th side length si is the distance between Vi and Vi+1. In two dimensions this distance is the Euclidean distance, computed as sqrt((x2 − x1)^2 + (y2 − y1)^2); in three dimensions, it is sqrt((x2 − x1)^2 + (y2 − y1)^2 + (z2 − z1)^2).

In regular polygons, all side lengths are equal; if the common length is s and the polygon has n sides, the perimeter is P = n s. The area A can be expressed as A = (n s^2) / (4 tan(π/n)) or equivalently A = (1/4) n s^2 cot(π/n). If the radius R of the circumscribed circle is known, the area can also be written as A = (n/2) R^2 sin(2π/n).

Side length is a fundamental quantity in many geometric relations. In triangles, side lengths relate to angles and other sides via the Law of Cosines: c^2 = a^2 + b^2 − 2ab cos(C). In general, side lengths serve as primary measurements for determining a polygon’s perimeter, area, and overall dimensions. They are measured in standard units of length, such as meters, centimeters, or inches, and are used across various fields, including mathematics, engineering, computer graphics, and architecture.
