Oxybutynin, known in Polish as oksybutynina, is a medication used to treat symptoms of overactive bladder, including urge urinary incontinence, urinary urgency, and frequency. It is prescribed for adults and may be used for certain bladder control problems due to neurogenic conditions. The drug is available in multiple formulations to fit different needs.

Mechanism of action and effects: Oxybutynin is a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, primarily blocking M2 and M3 receptors in the detrusor muscle of the bladder. By inhibiting parasympathetic stimulation, it reduces involuntary detrusor contractions during filling, increases bladder capacity, and lowers the frequency of urgent urination. The anticholinergic properties can lead to decreased secretions and other systemic effects.

Forms and administration: The medicine is offered as oral immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets for once-daily dosing, and a transdermal patch (which can lessen some central nervous system side effects). Dosing depends on formulation, patient age, and the severity of symptoms, and should follow a clinician’s guidance.

Adverse effects and safety considerations: Common adverse effects are anticholinergic in nature and include dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness, and urinary retention. Because oxybutynin can affect the central nervous system, cognitive effects may be more pronounced in older adults, though the transdermal patch may mitigate some CNS exposure. Contraindications include urinary retention, gastric outlet obstruction, uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, and significant hepatic impairment. Use with caution in the elderly and when other anticholinergic drugs are also being taken.

Interactions and notes: Oxybutynin can interact with other anticholinergic medications and with drugs that depress the central nervous system. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider.
