Oeconomia, also spelled oeconomia or oikonomia in some contexts, is a term rooted in the Greek oikonomia, meaning household management or stewardship. It combines oikos, house, and nomos, law or custom, and has historically referred to the administration of resources within a household or estate. In Latin and medieval and early modern writings, oeconomia was used in a similar sense and helped shape the later development of the word economy in modern languages.

In classical literature, the concept appears in Xenophon’s Oeconomicus, a Socratic dialogue on household management that discusses agriculture, finance, and the roles of family members in running a home and estate. The text treats prudent resource management as a practical art important to personal virtue and civic well-being, illustrating how household expertise was once seen as a foundation for broader governance.

Over time, the scope of oeconomia broadened from private household administration to the management of resources in city-states or states, contributing to early discussions of political economy. In this sense, oeconomia is a historical precursor to modern economic thought, used by writers to study labor, taxation, production, and distribution within a political community.

In theological usage, particularly in Eastern Orthodox thought, oikonomia denotes the divine economy—the dispensation of grace and the plan of salvation through history. It distinguishes God’s saving actions from abstract doctrine and is central to discussions of salvation history, sacraments, and church governance.

Today, the term economy is the standard term for the system of production, distribution, and consumption in a society. Oeconomia remains a scholarly and historical term, encountered in philology, philosophy, and theology when describing the historical meanings of household management and the origins of economic thought.
