odhodit
Odhodit is a Czech verb meaning to throw away, discard, or cast aside something, typically a physical object, but it can also be used metaphorically to abandon or discard something such as an idea, a plan, or worries. It is a perfective verb formed with the prefix od- attached to hodit, the root meaning to throw. As a result, it generally denotes a completed action and has a distinct past tense (odhodil/odhodila/odhodilo) and future forms (such as odhodím, odhodíš, odhodí, etc.). Its imperfective counterparts are expressed with verbs such as odhazovat or zahazovat, depending on nuance.
Usage examples illustrate both physical and figurative senses:
- Odhodil jsem starou krabici do kontejneru. (I threw away the old box into the container.)
- Odhodit nepotřebné věci ze stolu. (To throw away unnecessary items from the table.)
- Odhodit starosti. (To cast aside worries.)
- Odhodit plán, který se ukázal nevhodným. (To discard a plan that proved inappropriate.)
Metaphorical uses include discarding thoughts or ideas: "odhodit myšlenku" (to discard a thought). The phrase odhodlat
Etymology: from prefix od- meaning away or off + hodit meaning to throw.
