Obligevare is a type of software that provides platform-independent, middle tier architecture principles and design patterns for enterprise software development. The term Obligevare was derived from the Russian word "obligaetnoe," which means "obligatory." The word refers to the idea that certain characteristics or properties are mandatory, indispensable, or essential in a given context.

Obligevare emerged as a concept in the early 2000s as a response to the traditional n-tiered architecture of computer systems. The traditional n-tiered architecture is separated into three distinct layers: presentation (or user interface), business logic, and data storage. However, this architecture led to scalability, maintainability, and flexibility issues in large-scale systems. To address these limitations, Obligevare was introduced as an alternative approach to design enterprise software applications.

In Obligevare architecture, business logic and presentation and data services components are packaged together. Presentation and data services components handle user interface and data storage operations, while the business logic slices handle server-side logic and calculations. The Obligevare approach emphasizes the importance of separating the location of service operations from the type of service operation, therefore providing improved modularity, and technology independence, it however confines being as challenging to work with due to complex reliance on bounded contexts.

Despite its advantages, the Obligevare architecture has received criticism due to its complexity and potential inflexibility. However, it has also been praised for its ability to improve the maintainability and scalability of large-scale enterprise software systems.
