Növényrendszertan, also known as plant taxonomy, is the scientific field that deals with the classification, naming, and description of plants. It aims to organize the diversity of plant life into a hierarchical system, reflecting their evolutionary relationships. This system allows botanists to identify and communicate about plants consistently.

The fundamental unit of classification in plant taxonomy is the species. Species are grouped into genera, genera into families, families into orders, orders into classes, classes into divisions (or phyla), and divisions into kingdoms. Each taxonomic rank is defined by a set of shared characteristics, which can be morphological (physical form), anatomical (internal structure), reproductive, genetic, or chemical.

Plant taxonomy relies on various sources of evidence. Historically, morphology and anatomy were primary tools. However, with advancements in molecular biology, DNA sequencing has become increasingly important in establishing evolutionary relationships and refining classifications. Nomenclatural rules, governed by international codes of nomenclature, ensure that each plant species has a unique and universally recognized scientific name, typically a binomial (e.g., *Homo sapiens*).

The study of plant taxonomy is crucial for many other biological disciplines, including ecology, conservation biology, agriculture, and medicine, as it provides the framework for understanding plant diversity and its distribution.
