næseåbningen
Næseåbningen, commonly referred to as nostrils, are the external openings of the nasal cavity. They serve as the primary entry point for air into the respiratory system. Each næseåbning is lined with hair, known as vibrissae, which help to filter out larger particles from inhaled air, preventing them from reaching the lungs. The lining of the næseåbninger also produces mucus, a sticky substance that traps dust, pollen, and other airborne irritants. This mucus is then propelled backward by tiny cilia, microscopic hair-like structures, towards the throat where it can be swallowed or expelled. The shape and size of næseåbninger can vary between individuals and are influenced by genetics. In many animals, the næseåbninger play a crucial role in olfaction, the sense of smell, by directing odor molecules towards the olfactory epithelium located further within the nasal cavity.
