Glands are classified based on their structure and mode of secretion. Structurally, they can be simple, with an unbranched duct, or compound, with a branched duct system. Secretory portions can be tubular, alveolar (sac-like), or tubuloalveolar. Regarding secretion, glands can be merocrine, where the product is released via exocytosis without cellular damage; apocrine, where a portion of the cytoplasm is shed along with the secretion; or holocrine, where the entire cell disintegrates to release its contents.
