Närvirakus is a Finnish term that translates to "nerve inflammation" or "neuritis." It broadly refers to a condition affecting the peripheral nervous system, where one or more nerves become inflamed or damaged. This inflammation can disrupt the normal functioning of the nerves, leading to a variety of symptoms.

The causes of närvirakus are diverse and can include infections such as Lyme disease or viral infections, autoimmune disorders where the body’s immune system attacks its own nerves, physical injury or trauma to a nerve, and exposure to toxins like heavy metals or certain medications. In some cases, the cause may remain unknown, a condition termed idiopathic närvirakus.

Autonomic nerve dysfunction can also occur, affecting bodily functions like heart rate, digestion, or sweating.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a neurological examination, and sometimes nerve conduction studies or electromyography (EMG) to assess nerve function. Blood tests may be conducted to rule out underlying causes like infections or autoimmune conditions. Treatment for närvirakus aims to address the underlying cause and manage symptoms. This can include medications to reduce inflammation, pain relief, physical therapy to maintain muscle strength, and specific treatments for the identified cause, such as antibiotics for infections. Prognosis varies greatly depending on the cause and severity of the nerve damage.
