Närviimpulsside, also known as nerve impulse transmission, is the fundamental process by which information is communicated throughout the nervous system. This electrochemical signal allows neurons, the specialized cells of the nervous system, to communicate with each other and with other cells in the body, such as muscles and glands.

The process begins when a neuron receives a stimulus. If the stimulus is strong enough to reach a certain threshold, it triggers an action potential, which is a rapid, transient change in the electrical potential across the neuron's membrane. This change is caused by the movement of ions, primarily sodium and potassium, through specialized protein channels in the neuron's membrane. The action potential then propagates down the length of the neuron's axon, which is a long, slender projection.

At the end of the axon, at a junction called a synapse, the electrical signal is converted into a chemical signal. The neuron releases neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers, into the synaptic cleft, the small space between neurons. These neurotransmitters then bind to receptors on the adjacent neuron or target cell, triggering a new electrical or chemical signal in that cell. This process allows for the transmission of information from one neuron to another, forming complex neural circuits that underlie all nervous system functions, including thought, movement, and sensation.
