Nyálképződés refers to the process of saliva production in the mouth. This essential bodily function is primarily carried out by three major salivary glands: the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands, as well as numerous smaller minor salivary glands scattered throughout the oral mucosa.

Saliva is a complex fluid composed mainly of water, electrolytes, mucus, enzymes, and antimicrobial compounds. Its production is regulated by the autonomic nervous system, with both sympathetic and parasympathetic stimulation influencing the volume and composition of saliva. Chemoreceptors and mechanoreceptors in the mouth, triggered by the sight, smell, taste, or even thought of food, initiate the reflex salivary secretion.

The functions of saliva are diverse and crucial for oral health. It moistens food, aiding in chewing and swallowing, and begins the digestive process by containing enzymes like amylase, which breaks down carbohydrates. Saliva also lubricates the oral cavity, protecting the teeth and soft tissues from mechanical damage. Furthermore, its antimicrobial properties help to neutralize acids produced by bacteria, preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Saliva also plays a role in taste perception by dissolving food particles. Disruptions in nyálképződés can lead to xerostomia, or dry mouth, which can have significant implications for oral hygiene and overall well-being.
