Nyomatékgörbék, or "torque curves" in English, are graphical representations used to illustrate the performance characteristics of an engine, particularly its rotational force output. These curves typically plot torque (measured in Newton-meters or pound-feet) on the vertical axis against engine speed (measured in revolutions per minute or RPM) on the horizontal axis.

A torque curve shows how much twisting force the engine can produce at different engine speeds. Generally, engines produce their peak torque at a specific RPM range. The shape of the torque curve is crucial for understanding how an engine will feel and perform in various driving conditions. A broad, flat torque curve indicates that the engine delivers strong torque over a wide range of RPMs, leading to flexible acceleration and less need for frequent gear changes. Conversely, a narrow, peaky torque curve means the engine's strongest pulling power is concentrated within a smaller RPM band, requiring the driver to keep the engine within that sweet spot for optimal performance.

Engine designers aim to tailor torque curves to the intended application of the vehicle. For example, a truck engine might have a torque curve designed for high torque at low RPMs to facilitate towing heavy loads, while a sports car engine might have a curve that peaks at higher RPMs for spirited performance. Analyzing the torque curve alongside the horsepower curve (which shows power output versus RPM) provides a comprehensive understanding of an engine's capabilities.
