Nyirokcsatornák are vessels that form part of the lymphatic system. They are responsible for transporting lymph fluid throughout the body. Lymph is a clear to white fluid containing protein and lymphocytes, which are disease-fighting white blood cells. This fluid originates from blood plasma that has seeped out of the capillaries into the interstitial spaces. The lymphatic system collects this excess fluid, known as lymph, and returns it to the bloodstream.

The nyirokcsatornák are a network of tubes that begin as tiny, blind-ended vessels called lymphatic capillaries. These capillaries are found in most tissues and organs of the body. They have thin walls that allow interstitial fluid to enter easily. As these capillaries merge, they form larger lymphatic vessels. These larger vessels eventually converge to form two main lymphatic ducts: the thoracic duct and the right lymphatic duct.

The thoracic duct is the largest lymphatic vessel and collects lymph from the lower body, the left side of the head, neck, and chest, and the left arm. It empties into the left subclavian vein. The right lymphatic duct collects lymph from the right side of the head, neck, and chest, and the right arm, draining into the right subclavian vein.

Along the course of the nyirokcsatornák are lymph nodes, which are small, bean-shaped organs that filter the lymph and house immune cells. The movement of lymph through these vessels is facilitated by the contraction of surrounding muscles, the pulsation of nearby arteries, and valves within the nyirokcsatornák themselves, which prevent backflow. This continuous circulation is vital for maintaining fluid balance and for the immune system's ability to detect and fight infections.
