nubeculae
Nubeculae, also known as Magellanic Clouds, are two irregular dwarf galaxies that are satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. They are visible to the naked eye in the Southern Hemisphere of Earth. The larger of the two is the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and the smaller is the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). They are located relatively close to the Milky Way, about 160,000 light-years away for the LMC and 200,000 light-years away for the SMC.
The Magellanic Clouds are prominent features in the southern night sky. The LMC appears as a detached
Historically, the nubeculae were observed and documented by ancient astronomers. Ferdinand Magellan observed them during his
