ntvdmexe is a core component of Microsoft Windows operating systems that facilitates the execution of 16-bit Windows and MS-DOS applications. It is known as the NTVDM, which stands for NT Virtual DOS Machine. This subsystem creates a virtual environment that simulates the hardware and operating system environment necessary for older 16-bit programs to run within the modern 32-bit or 64-bit Windows architecture.

When a 16-bit application is launched on a compatible Windows version, NTVDM is invoked to manage its execution. It intercepts calls made by the 16-bit application and translates them into the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit calls that the underlying Windows kernel can understand. This translation process allows legacy software, which was designed for much older operating systems like Windows 3.1 or MS-DOS, to function on contemporary Windows systems.

The presence of NTVDM is crucial for backward compatibility.
