Notabelen are a term used to describe a class of prominent individuals in a community who hold informal or formal influence. The word is Dutch in origin, derived from notabel, meaning worthy of notice, and is used to denote people who stand out due to status, wealth, or achievement.

In the Netherlands and other Dutch-speaking areas, notabelen referred to local elites such as landowners, merchants, clergy, and magistrates who held influence in towns and districts. They often advised authorities and served in municipal or provincial councils, acting as intermediaries between rulers and the population.

Historically, notabelen formed a key part of the urban elite sometimes described as regents or the patriciate. They helped organize taxation, public works, and security, and could influence appointments or policy at the local level. This made them an important force in governance even without holding formal offices.

In colonial contexts, such as the Dutch East Indies, inlandsche notabelen were local elites recognized by the colonial administration to facilitate governance and administration. They helped bridge colonial authorities and indigenous communities, coordinating with authorities on taxation, law, and local disputes.

Today the term can refer more broadly to distinguished persons within a community or organization who influence decisions without necessarily holding formal office. The concept highlights how informal power networks—wealth, education, family ties, and social status—shape local politics and governance.
