Nonsaturation is the state of not being saturated. In scientific usage it describes a condition in which a system has not yet reached its maximum capacity to absorb, dissolve, or hold a particular substance under specified conditions. The term is often contrasted with saturation, where the capacity is reached, and with supersaturation, where more than the equilibrium amount is present.

In solution chemistry, nonsaturation is commonly referred to as undersaturation. A solution is undersaturated if the concentration of dissolved solute is below its solubility limit at the given temperature and pressure. Undersaturation means the system can dissolve more solute until equilibrium is reached, while precipitation or crystallization occurs only when the solution becomes saturated or supersaturated.

In adsorption and surface science, nonsaturation describes a surface with unoccupied adsorption sites. As adsorbate concentration increases, more sites become filled until the adsorption approaches a saturated level. The concept is described by adsorption isotherms and helps predict how much substance a surface can hold under certain conditions.

In atmospheric science, air is nonsaturated with respect to water vapor when the relative humidity is below the saturation point at a given temperature. Nonsaturated air can hold more water vapor, and condensation occurs only when humidity reaches the saturation point or when cooling induces supersaturation.

Nonsaturation can also be relevant in materials processing and polymer chemistry, where it may refer to the presence of available reactive or bonding sites that can participate in further reactions or phase changes. The precise meaning is context-dependent and often used interchangeably with undersaturation.
