Nonoxidative is an adjective used to describe processes, reactions, or conditions that do not involve oxidation–reduction changes or do not require oxygen. In chemistry, a nonoxidative process is one in which the oxidation states of all elements remain constant throughout the reaction. Such processes contrast with oxidative ones, where oxidation states change or oxygen participates as a reactant or product. Nonoxidative steps can still involve electron transfer, but the overall redox state is unchanged. In chemical synthesis, nonoxidative routes include reactions that proceed without external oxidants; examples include certain carbon–carbon coupling reactions and some catalytic pathways.

In biology and physiology, nonoxidative metabolism refers to energy-producing pathways that do not rely on the mitochondrial electron transport chain and oxygen. The best-known example is glycolysis, a cytosolic pathway that can operate in the absence of oxygen to produce a net gain of ATP. Fermentation mechanisms, such as lactic acid fermentation in animals or ethanol fermentation in yeast, regenerate NAD+ to sustain glycolysis when oxygen is scarce. This is typically contrasted with oxidative metabolism, which uses oxygen as the final electron acceptor in mitochondria to harvest more energy. In exercise physiology, nonoxidative metabolism supports high-intensity, short-duration activities, while oxidative metabolism predominates during longer, aerobic efforts.

Industrially, nonoxidative processing can describe methods that minimize exposure to oxidants to protect sensitive substrates, prevent unwanted oxidation, or operate under conditions where oxidation is undesirable.
