Nonconstraint is a term used in modeling, optimization, and decision-making to denote a condition, variable, or relation that is not subject to explicit restrictions or bounds defined within a system. The term is not widely standardized in formal terminology; in many disciplines the more common phrase is unconstrained or no constraints. When present, nonconstraints indicate freedom of choice within the remaining structure of the model, and they interact with other constraints to determine feasibility or optimality.

In mathematics and optimization, constraints define the feasible region. A nonconstraint may refer to a variable not restricted by any constraint, or a component of the objective or model that is not bound by a constraint. For example, in a problem described as partially constrained, some decision variables may be free to take any value while others are restricted. In unconstrained optimization, all decision variables are nonconstrained; the problem asks for an extremum without feasibility bounds.

In practice, the presence of nonconstraints can increase model flexibility and expressiveness, but can also lead to unbounded or ill-posed problems if not handled carefully. Analysts may introduce implicit or explicit regularization, or add domain knowledge to ensure that solutions are meaningful and implementable.
