noncephalopods

A noncephalopod is a broad, informal term used in biology to refer to any animal that is not a cephalopod. Cephalopods are a class of marine molluscs that includes animals like squid, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses. They are characterized by their bilateral symmetry, a head surrounded by a ring of tentacles, and a mantle. Therefore, noncephalopods encompass the vast majority of animal life on Earth.

This extremely diverse group includes invertebrates such as insects, crustaceans, worms, jellyfish, and starfish, as well as vertebrates like fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The defining feature of a noncephalopod is simply the absence of the specific characteristics that define a cephalopod. There is no single shared evolutionary lineage or unique set of traits that unites all noncephalopods, other than their exclusion from the cephalopod class. The study of noncephalopods is essentially the study of zoology in its entirety, excluding the specific focus on cephalopod anatomy, physiology, and evolution.
