NonSomali is a descriptor used in some contexts to refer to people who are not Somali by ethnicity or nationality. It appears in discussions of demographics, sociolinguistics, migration, and regional politics in the Horn of Africa and among the Somali diaspora. The term is broad and can encompass a variety of groups living in or around Somali-speaking areas, including Afars, Arabs, Bantus in Somalia, Oromos, Ethiopians, Djiboutians, Yemenis, and other non-Somali populations. It can also apply to individuals within Somalia who do not identify as Somali, or to language communities that do not speak Somali as their first language.

In research and policy, nonSomali may be used as a neutral label when the focus is on population-level patterns rather than on individual identities. However, because it groups together diverse ethnic, national, and cultural identities, the term can obscure significant differences and experiences among its constituents. Critics caution that it risks essentializing people by what they are not, rather than by what they are.

When possible, more precise descriptors are preferred, such as specifying ethnicity (for example, Afar, Bantu, or Arab), nationality (Djiboutian, Ethiopian, Kenyan), or language groups.
