Nitrokäsittelyihin, often translated as nitro-treatment or nitration treatment, refers to a set of processes involving the introduction of nitro groups (-NO2) into organic molecules. This is a fundamental reaction in organic chemistry with wide-ranging applications. The primary method for achieving nitration is through the use of nitrating agents, most commonly a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid, often referred to as "mixed acid." The sulfuric acid acts as a catalyst, protonating the nitric acid and generating the highly electrophilic nitronium ion (NO2+), which then attacks the organic substrate.

The specific conditions of the nitration, such as temperature, concentration of reagents, and reaction time, are crucial for controlling the outcome and preventing unwanted side reactions, including over-nitration or oxidation. Different classes of organic compounds react with varying ease. For instance, the nitration of benzene yields nitrobenzene, which is then reduced to aniline. Nitroglycerin, a well-known explosive and vasodilator, is produced by nitrating glycerol. Similarly, cellulose can be nitrated to produce nitrocellulose, used in lacquers, explosives, and photographic film. The precise control and understanding of nitration reactions are therefore essential for numerous industrial chemical processes.
