Nitrogénkötéseket, or nitrogen fixation, is a vital biochemical process that converts atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) into ammonia (NH3) or other nitrogen compounds that plants can use. Atmospheric nitrogen is abundant but largely inert, making it inaccessible to most organisms. This conversion is essential for all life on Earth as nitrogen is a key component of amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

There are several ways nitrogen fixation occurs. The most significant natural pathway is biological nitrogen fixation, carried out by certain bacteria and archaea. These microorganisms, often found in symbiotic relationships with plants like legumes, possess the enzyme nitrogenase, which catalyzes the reduction of N2 to ammonia. Industrial nitrogen fixation, primarily through the Haber-Bosch process, is also a major source of usable nitrogen, producing ammonia for fertilizers on a massive scale. Lightning strikes in the atmosphere can also fix nitrogen, converting it into nitrates that are then washed into the soil.

Without nitrogen fixation, the global nitrogen cycle would be disrupted, severely limiting plant growth and subsequently affecting all trophic levels in ecosystems. Human activities, particularly the use of synthetic fertilizers derived from industrial nitrogen fixation, have significantly increased the amount of reactive nitrogen in the environment, leading to both benefits for agriculture and environmental concerns such as eutrophication and greenhouse gas emissions.
