Nitrogénforrás refers to any source from which organisms can obtain nitrogen, an essential element for life. Nitrogen is a key component of amino acids, proteins, nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), and other vital biomolecules.

In natural ecosystems, nitrogen exists in various forms, and different organisms utilize different sources. The primary atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is abundant but largely unusable by most life forms due to its strong triple bond. Nitrogen fixation, a process carried out by certain bacteria and archaea, converts atmospheric N2 into ammonia (NH3) or ammonium (NH4+), making it accessible to plants. These nitrogen-fixing microbes can be free-living in the soil or water, or symbiotic, such as those found in the root nodules of legumes.

Plants obtain nitrogen primarily from the soil in the form of ammonium (NH4+) or nitrate (NO3-). These inorganic ions are absorbed by plant roots and used to synthesize organic nitrogen compounds. Animals, being heterotrophs, obtain their nitrogen by consuming plants or other animals. This ingested organic nitrogen is then broken down and assimilated into their own tissues.

Decomposition also plays a crucial role as a nitrogen source. When organisms die, decomposers (bacteria and fungi) break down their organic matter, releasing nitrogen back into the environment as inorganic forms, thus completing the nitrogen cycle. Human activities, such as the use of fertilizers and industrial processes, also contribute significantly to the nitrogen cycle and can be considered anthropogenic nitrogen sources.
