Nitrate is a chemical compound with the formula NO3-. It is a polyatomic ion and a common anion. In nature, nitrate is a significant component of the nitrogen cycle, an essential process for life on Earth. Nitrates are formed through the oxidation of ammonia, a process that can occur biologically or industrially.

In biological systems, nitrification is a two-step process carried out by specific bacteria. First, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite (NO2-). Then, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria convert nitrite to nitrate. This nitrate can then be assimilated by plants for growth or further transformed through denitrification, where it is converted back into nitrogen gas and released into the atmosphere.

Industrially, nitrates are produced primarily for use as fertilizers. The Haber-Bosch process synthesizes ammonia, which is then oxidized to nitric acid, a precursor to various nitrate salts like ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate. These fertilizers are crucial for agriculture, providing plants with essential nitrogen for healthy development. However, excessive use of nitrate fertilizers can lead to environmental issues, including eutrophication of water bodies due to runoff.

Nitrate also plays a role in human and animal physiology. While essential for growth, high concentrations of nitrate in drinking water can be a health concern, particularly for infants, as it can lead to methemoglobinemia, also known as "blue baby syndrome." Regulatory bodies set limits for nitrate levels in potable water to ensure public safety.
