Nitraatteille is the allative plural form of the Finnish noun nitraatti, meaning “to nitrates” or “for nitrates.” In Finnish, this form is used to indicate direction toward nitrates and is not a standalone concept; the root nitraatti refers to nitrates, salts or esters of nitric acid.

Nitrates are chemical compounds that contain the nitrate ion (NO3−). Common nitrate salts include sodium nitrate (NaNO3), potassium nitrate (KNO3), and calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)2). Nitrates occur naturally in soils, groundwater, and mineral deposits, and they are widely used in agriculture, industry, and food processing.

Production and sources vary. Natural deposits such as caliche or Chilean nitrate beds have supplied commercial nitrates historically. Industrially, nitrates are produced by neutralizing nitric acid with base materials to form the corresponding nitrate salts, or as byproducts of fertilizer production. In soils, nitrifying bacteria convert ammonium compounds to nitrate, which plants can uptake.

Applications are diverse. Nitrates are a major component of mineral fertilizers, delivering nitrogen essential for plant growth. They are also used in food preservation, notably in curing meats. Historically, nitrates such as potassium nitrate have played a role as oxidizers in propellants and explosives, though modern formulations often rely on more specialized compounds.

Health and environmental considerations are important. Elevated nitrate levels in drinking water can pose health risks, particularly for infants, as nitrate can be reduced to nitrite and interfere with oxygen transport. Regulatory limits exist in many countries (for example, around 10 mg/L nitrate-nitrogen in drinking water in the United States, or 50 mg/L as nitrate). Excess nitrates can also contribute to eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems.
