Niigata may refer to Niigata Prefecture or to Niigata City, the prefecture’s capital and largest city.

Niigata Prefecture is located on the west coast of Honshu in the Chūbu region, facing the Sea of Japan. It contains parts of the Echigo Plain and the Echigo Mountains, with the Shinano River running through the area. Winters are cold with heavy snowfall in the inland regions. The economy centers on agriculture—especially rice—fisheries, and light manufacturing. The prefecture includes Sado Island, known for its rugged coastline and cultural heritage.

Niigata City is the capital and largest city of Niigata Prefecture, located on the Sea of Japan coast. It has long served as a port and commercial hub for northern Honshu and is a base for rice trading and industry. The city is connected to Tokyo by the Joetsu Shinkansen and is served by JR East rail lines and Niigata Airport. The Port of Niigata handles cargo and passenger ferries, including links to Sado Island.

Niigata is renowned for rice and sake production; Sado Island hosts the Kodo taiko ensemble; the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field festival showcases contemporary art in rural areas; and the region features historic districts, museums, and hot springs.
