Nietfluorescente describes a material or substance that does not emit visible light when it is excited by electromagnetic radiation, such as ultraviolet or blue light. In practical terms, these substances do not glow after illumination, or their emitted light is too weak to be detected. This is in contrast with fluorescent materials, which quickly emit light while the excitation source remains on.

The absence of fluorescence can arise because the material lacks favorable electronic transitions that produce visible photons, or because the excited energy is dissipated non-radiatively as heat. Fluorescence, when present, involves the rapid emission of photons after a short-lived excited state, typically with lifetimes on the order of nanoseconds. In non-fluorescent materials, the fluorescence quantum yield is effectively near zero.

Non-fluorescent properties are often used as baselines or controls in fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging. They can also describe pigments, coatings, or plastics that do not glow under UV illumination, which is important in safety labeling, art conservation, and product design.
