Neutrálizálás is a chemical process where an acid and a base react to form a salt and water. This reaction effectively cancels out the acidic and basic properties of the original substances, hence the term "neutralization." The pH of the resulting solution typically approaches 7, which is the neutral pH.

The general equation for a neutralization reaction is: Acid + Base → Salt + Water. For example, when hydrochloric acid (HCl), a strong acid, reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a strong base, the products are sodium chloride (NaCl), a salt, and water (H₂O). The hydrogen ions (H⁺) from the acid combine with the hydroxide ions (OH⁻) from the base to form water molecules. The remaining ions, a cation from the base and an anion from the acid, form the salt.

Neutralization reactions are important in various applications. In industrial processes, they are used to control the pH of wastewater before discharge. In laboratories, they are fundamental for titrations, a quantitative chemical analysis technique used to determine the concentration of a solution. In biological systems, the body uses buffering systems to neutralize acids and bases produced during metabolic processes, maintaining a stable internal pH. Even in everyday life, neutralizing an acid spill with a base like baking soda is a practical example of this chemical principle.
