Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals across a chemical synapse, such as a neuromuscular junction, from one neuron (nerve cell) to another 'target' neuron, muscle cell, or gland cell. They are released from the presynaptic terminal of a neuron and bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, causing a response in the target cell. This process is fundamental to the functioning of the nervous system, enabling communication between nerve cells and mediating a vast array of physiological and psychological processes.

There are numerous types of neurotransmitters, each with distinct chemical structures and functions. The action of a neurotransmitter is terminated by several mechanisms. These can include enzymatic degradation, where the neurotransmitter is broken down by enzymes; reuptake, where the neurotransmitter is transported back into the presynaptic neuron; or diffusion, where the neurotransmitter drifts away from the synapse. The balance and precise functioning of these neurotransmitter systems are crucial for maintaining health, and disruptions in their activity are implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders.
