Smectic liquid crystals exhibit a higher degree of order than nematic phases. Their molecules are not only aligned in a common direction but are also arranged in distinct layers. Within these layers, the molecules can move relative to each other, giving the smectic phase a fluid-like characteristic. There are several subtypes of smectic phases, such as smectic A and smectic C, differing in the precise orientation of molecules within the layers.

Cholesteric liquid crystals, also known as chiral nematic phases, are formed by chiral molecules. These molecules arrange themselves in helical structures. As a result, cholesteric liquid crystals exhibit unique optical properties, such as selective reflection of light, which can change with temperature or applied fields, leading to applications in thermometers and optical sensors.
