In an internal combustion engine, a water-based coolant circulates through passages in the engine block and cylinder head, absorbing heat generated by combustion. This heated coolant then flows to a radiator, where it is cooled by air passing through the radiator fins. A fan may assist in this process. The cooled liquid is then pumped back into the engine to repeat the cycle. This system helps maintain the engine's optimal operating temperature, preventing overheating and damage.

In computer systems, liquid cooling is employed to dissipate heat generated by high-performance components like CPUs and GPUs. A liquid coolant circulates through a closed loop, passing through a water block attached to the heat-generating component. The coolant absorbs heat and carries it to a radiator, where fans help dissipate the heat into the surrounding air. This method can achieve more efficient and quieter cooling compared to traditional air cooling, especially under heavy loads. The coolant typically consists of deionized water with additives to prevent corrosion and biological growth.
