nerverne

Nerverne are bundles of nerve fibers that form the peripheral nervous system's conduits, transmitting sensory information to the brain and carrying motor commands to muscles and glands. In many languages such as Danish and Norwegian, nerverne is the definite plural form of nerve.

Nerverne contain axons surrounded by connective tissue. Each axon is wrapped in endoneurium; fascicles are wrapped by perineurium; the entire nerve is enclosed in epineurium. Nerverne transport both sensory and motor fibers; many are mixed nerves.

Cranial nerves emerge from the brain; spinal nerves from the spinal cord, forming dorsal and ventral roots that join to form mixed nerves. The peripheral nervous system includes somatic nerves controlling voluntary muscles and visceral/autonomic nerves governing organs.

Conduction occurs via action potentials propagating along axons, often aided by myelin produced by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system; this enables rapid saltatory conduction. Damage to nerverne can cause numbness, weakness, or paralysis and may result in neuropathies; peripheral nerves have some regenerative capacity, contrasted with CNS neurons.

Major nerves include the sciatic, median, ulnar, and facial nerves.
