Neonkylteistä, often translated as neon signs, are illuminated displays created by bending glass tubes filled with a noble gas, typically neon, into various shapes and letters. When an electric current is passed through the gas, it excites the electrons, causing them to emit light. While the term "neon sign" is commonly used, the distinctive red-orange glow is specifically produced by neon gas. Other colors are achieved by using different noble gases or by coating the inside of the glass tubes with fluorescent powders that glow when exposed to ultraviolet light emitted by the gas.

These signs gained significant popularity in the early to mid-20th century as a vibrant and eye-catching advertising medium. They were widely adopted by businesses, from restaurants and bars to theaters and shops, to attract attention and convey branding. The art of neon sign making, known as neon bending, requires considerable skill and craftsmanship to heat and shape the glass tubes without breakage.

While newer technologies like LED lighting offer more energy-efficient alternatives, traditional neon signs continue to be appreciated for their unique aesthetic, vintage charm, and the warm, inviting glow they produce.
