neochromosomal

Neochromosomal is an adjective used to describe anything relating to a neochromosome. A neochromosome is a chromosome that is either newly formed or highly rearranged, resulting in a distinct chromosomal entity that is separate from the normal set of chromosomes.

In medical and cancer genetics, neochromosomes are large, structurally abnormal chromosomes that arise through complex rearrangements, duplication, and amplification of genetic material. They can emerge through processes such as chromothripsis, breakage-fusion-bridge cycles, or telomere dysfunction, and they are often inherited by daughter cells during cell division. These engineered chromosomes can be introduced into host cells to enable stable maintenance and expression of complex genetic circuits without integrating into the host genome. Neochromosomes in this context are built with essential elements such as centromeres for proper segregation, replication origins, and telomeres for stability in linear designs, and they are used to facilitate modular genetic engineering and industrial bioproduction.
