Nenäontelo refers to the nasal cavity in Finnish. It is the space within the nose, located behind the nostrils and extending back to the nasopharynx. This vital part of the respiratory system plays a crucial role in breathing, smelling, and filtering the air we inhale.

The nasal cavity is lined with a mucous membrane, which is responsible for warming, humidifying, and cleaning the inhaled air. Tiny hairs called cilia, also present in the lining, trap dust, pollen, and other airborne particles, preventing them from entering the lungs. These cilia then sweep the trapped particles towards the throat to be swallowed or expelled.

Within the nasal cavity are structures known as turbinates (or conchae), which are bony projections covered in the mucous membrane. These increase the surface area of the nasal cavity, further enhancing the air conditioning process. The sense of smell originates from olfactory receptors located in the upper part of the nasal cavity. When airborne molecules reach these receptors, they send signals to the brain, allowing us to perceive different odors.

The nasal cavity also serves as a pathway for air to reach the lungs. Its complex structure helps to direct airflow efficiently, and it connects to the sinuses, which are air-filled spaces in the skull. The health of the nasal cavity is essential for overall respiratory well-being and contributes significantly to our ability to experience the world through smell.
