The nenänieluun, or nasal concha, refers to the three bony and soft tissue structures located within the nasal cavity. These structures, also known as turbinates, play a crucial role in filtering, humidifying, and warming the air we inhale before it reaches the lungs. The nasal conchae are composed of two lateral conchae (inferior and middle) and one superior concha, each projecting into the nasal passage from the lateral walls of the nasal cavity.

The inferior nasal concha is the largest and is primarily composed of bone, while the middle and superior conchae are part of the ethmoid bone, a spongy structure located between the eyes. The conchae create narrow passages called meatuses beneath and between them, which help direct airflow and enhance the efficiency of the nasal cavity’s functions. The mucous membranes covering the conchae are rich in blood vessels and contain olfactory receptors, contributing to the sense of smell.

Common issues related to the nasal conchae include inflammation, known as turbinate hypertrophy, which can lead to nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, and postnasal drip. Allergies, infections, or structural abnormalities may cause swelling or enlargement of the conchae. Treatment options often involve nasal sprays, antihistamines, or, in severe cases, surgical procedures such as turbinate reduction.

The nasal conchae are also significant in the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses, as they influence sinus drainage. Proper function of the conchae is essential for maintaining respiratory health and protecting the lower airways from irritants and pathogens.
