negatsiya

Negatsiya, or negation, is a linguistic concept describing the denial or contradiction of a proposition. It marks that a statement is false, that an action did not occur, or that a property does not hold. Grammatically, negation is usually realized with devices such as negative particles, verb inflection, affixes, or auxiliary constructions that modify the predicate or the sentence as a whole.

Most languages express negation with a negative particle or word (for example not). Others encode it in the verb through inflection or periphrasis. Some languages employ multiple negation elements in a single clause, a phenomenon known as negative concord or double negation, depending on the language’s rules.

Negation can be sentential (negating the entire proposition) or lexical/predicate (negating a specific predicate). The scope of negation and its interaction with polarity items (such as any, ever) are important for interpretation. In some languages, the position of the negation marker determines what part of the sentence is negated.

In formal semantics, negation is treated as a logical operator that inverts the truth conditions of a statement. In language processing, accurately identifying negation is essential for tasks such as sentiment analysis, information extraction, and translation. Across linguistic traditions, negatsiya systems vary in form but share the same function: to convey denial, contradiction, or absence, and to interact with tense, aspect, mood, and evidentiality in complex ways.
