Negatívokról is a Hungarian term that translates to "about negatives" or "on negatives." It is often used in photography and film contexts, referring to the intermediate photographic image that contains reversed tones and colors from the original scene. In a negative, light areas of the subject appear dark, and dark areas appear light. Similarly, colors are rendered as their complementary colors. For example, a blue object would appear yellow on a color negative.

These negatives are crucial in the traditional photographic process because they serve as the master image from which positive prints are made. Light is shone through the negative onto light-sensitive photographic paper. The areas of the negative that are dark block more light, resulting in lighter areas on the print, and vice versa. This process reverses the tonal and color information captured in the negative, recreating the appearance of the original subject on the positive print.

Historically, negatives were made on glass plates or flexible film coated with a light-sensitive emulsion, typically silver halide. The development process transformed the exposed silver halide crystals into a visible image. While digital photography has largely replaced film, the concept of a negative image still exists in digital workflows as a preparatory stage before image editing and output. Digital negatives, or raw image files, contain unprocessed data from the camera sensor, offering a wide range of editing possibilities similar to traditional film negatives.
